It all comes down to this.

Part IV

He rushed towards the cabin, blinded by a primal rage. The frenzy was vast as the night, he felt it all at once: anger, joy, sadness, duty, destiny and love- love for life. Love is life. Then it all went black. But still he could see, not with his eyes but with his mind; all his senses became one, smelling the colours, hearing the texture, it was a blur of stimuli that escapes description. An elusive, abstract interaction between his mind and the world outside, like if the wall that divides the self from the context became thinner and paler, eventually disappearing. He understood then, that he was being given a glimpse of the absolute perspective, the Aleph; god’s point of view. Yes, he was fighting the sage. And he was the sage, fighting the avatar of wilderness. He was both. He was non. He was everywhere because he was nowhere, ethereally embracing the endless void-losing himself, carried into the unexplored depths of the mind and the spirit. That was reality, unpolluted by the physical senses, free from the distortion of consciousness. Reality in its true form. All the sounds of all that exists, all the tones. Nothing was beautiful or ugly anymore.

Then silence.

-Where am I?
-You are in yourself.
-...who are you?
-I... am forever.

It was peaceful. It made sense. Nothing mattered. He was in presence of life Itself. The unique organism that makes up the multiverse. The fight was long over. Slowly, he was coming back to himself, to his own perspective; first the beast, then Jim again. He was standing in front of the Fire’s Shadow. She was had no longer haunting green eyes, ivory skin and golden hair. Both her hair and eyes were brown. She no longer had the angel-like aspect. And yet, he found her more beautiful than ever, she was real, she was believable. They held hands.

-Is it over?
-I don’t know.
-What.. what shall I do now?
-Well... you can kiss me, for a start.

He did. Then he heard her in his head.

-Close your eyes and jump.

He did.

Familiar sounds. People talking. Cars. He opened his eyes, and realised that he was once again sitting in a fast-food parlour, under a yellow and red umbrella, in the side of the street he always walked in the morning to catch the bus to work. The same street where he learned to ride a bike, 17 years ago. He was again Jim, having a burger. Something caught his attention and then he saw her, staring back at him from the other side of the street, holding a plastic bag full of groceries. He laid the burger on the table and emptied this wallet next to it as he stood up and rushed towards her.

-Ehh...um hi. You... could you...
-...Yes?
-Ok. Listen. This will sound strange. I think I know you.
-You don’t...
-Oh.
-...But you could. You can start by buying me coffee.
-Close your eyes and jump.
-What?
-Nothing, what kind of coffee do you like?

They walked down the street, and two blocks later, they were holding hands.

THE END
